Looking at her style resume, Kate Winslet tends to choose chic black dresses and bold statement-making hues over eye-popping prints.

Another thing to notice about the Mildred Pierce star’s style: her red carpet looks usually have subtle details that make them stand out among a sea of over-the-top gowns.

At the BAFTAs February 2009, the actress chose a fashion-forward Zac Posen fishtail gown — years before the figure-hugging design became a staple out on the red carpet.

Three years late, the British beauty chose a Jenny Packham gown made of a black silk satin bodice with a key-hole cut-out and an ivory silk crepe skirt teamed with a ribbon belt embellished with Swarovski crystals at the Golden Globes Jan. 15.

Kate Winslet gets presented with naughty French poem at Cesars

Kate Winslet got the verbal equivalent of a French kiss at the Cesar Awards this weekend.

The 36-year-old “Mildred Pierce” star was presented with an Honorary Cesar award (the French equivalent of the Oscars) by French filmmaker Michel Gondry, who directed her in the 2004 film “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.”

Appropriately dressed in a gold sequined dress by Jenny Packham, Winslet laughed as Gondry serenaded her with a sexy poem — read in French with sometimes nonsensical English translation.

“My dear Kate, it is never too late to win a Cesar, because Kate wins late,” he began. “It’s hard work to make you come.”

To this, Winslet burst out laughing, before Gondry went on to claim that getting access to the actress’ “bottom” was a “no go.”

“In conclusion, your cleavage is generous,” he said. “Can your boobs touch my illusion…brilliant fortress of common desire.”

Winslet then took the podium and said with a sigh, “All of those comments about my cleavage!”

After thanking the crowd for honoring her with the award, she referred back to her naughty valentine.

“I’m thankful to Michel Gondry,” she said, “for talking about my boobs and my bottom on live French television.”

Winslet evidently could not get over Gondry’s cheekiness. As she walked off the stage with the director to cheers from he audience, she could be heard saying one final time, “I can’t believe you talked about my boobs and my butt!”

The getting of wisdom: At 36, actor Kate Winslet is peaking in self confidence.

ONE of the world’s outstanding actors, with six Oscar nominations and one statue (for The Reader) to show for it, Kate Winslet is entering a new era.

And not just because of her split from her husband, stage and film director Sam Mendes, almost two years ago.

“I’ve probably never felt as free or as self-confident in life as I do now,” Winslet, 36, says.

“It’s so much easier once you’ve gone through all the highs and lows that life throws at you and you realise that you’re still standing and that, actually, the world looks pretty good.

“That’s why I don’t dwell in the past – it’s much better to just get on with it!”

That she has. On the career side of things, she was nominated for two Golden Globes in January. She didn’t take out the Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical gong for her latest film Carnage, but did win Best Actress for playing a strong single mother in TV mini-series Mildred Pierce.

“Some people have wondered why I chose that role when my own marriage was breaking down,” Winslet acknowledges of Mildred Pierce.

“I actually committed to the part before any of that was going on in my own life, although the irony wasn’t lost on me while we were working on the series.”

On the personal side, she has been linked to several handsome suitors (British model Louis Dowler and more recently Richard Branson’s nephew Ned RocknRoll), and has moved her children (Mia, 11, from her marriage to actor Jim Threapleton, and Joe, 8, with Mendes) from New York to London so they’re closer to Mendes as he shoots the new Bond film Skyfall.

It is widely believed that on the 2008 film Revolutionary Road – which saw Mendes directing Winslet and co-star Leonardo DiCaprio – there was considerable friction between the couple, from which their marriage never recovered.

“It’s not the easiest situation being a single mother, but Sam has been very good in helping me with our children (since the separation),” Winslet says. “Even though it was hard at first, we’re all doing great and carrying on.”

Winslet has also tried her hand at being a real-life action hero. She made headlines last August for rescuing Richard Branson’s 90-year-old mother Eve after lightning set off a blaze on Branson’s private Caribbean island where Winslet had been staying with Ned.

“It was genuinely very scary, waking up at 4.30 in the morning to hear the sound of some of Richard’s nephews’ voices yelling that there was a fire. I jumped up and ran immediately towards the fire, because clearly I thought I could put it out,” Winslet recalls with a laugh.

But after realising the fire was out of control, she turned back to collect Mia and Joe, who were standing at their bedroom door.

“I said, trying to be reassuring, ‘It’s a fire, it’s fine. Go back inside just for two minutes and just close the door’. Then I found myself thinking, ‘Now what do I do?’ So I ran into the bedroom, started to put on a bra – you do strange things in disastrous moments – then thought, ‘That’s gonna take me too long’. So off came the bra, and on with the T-shirt.

“I grabbed a bag, grabbed the children, and carried granny (Eve) down the stairs.

“I have to say, Eve Branson is an extraordinarily stoic, powerful lady and she could have totally made it out on her own. I just helped that tiny little bit.”

If nothing else, it’s clear Winslet has been well-travelled lately. Shot in Paris, Carnage then premiered in Venice.

Based on the Tony Award-winning play God of Carnage and directed by Roman Polanski, the film centres around a meeting between two couples whose children have had an ugly schoolyard confrontation.

Set in real time, it finds Nancy (Winslet) and her husband Allan (Christoph Waltz) in an animated discussion with Penelope (Jodie Foster) and Michael (John C. Reilly).

With the controversial Polanski at the helm, Winslet admits she was cautious.

“At first you feel a certain minor level of fear from working with Roman, because he can be so intense, but then you love his way of pushing and pulling you into the scenes.

“Roman said he’d never come across a group of actors who were completely non-competitive with each other, and really sticking together. We were all taken aback by that compliment. It made us feel really good about how we were functioning as a group.”

Winslet was drawn to Carnage as a chance to “lay bare the gamut of human emotions”.

“I’m always interested in personal dramas. That’s what you live for as an actor and that’s where the true creative high comes from,” she says.

“You want to be able to throw yourself into the character you create and let that take you to somewhere you didn’t expect to go when you first read the script or walked on to the set.”

Past roles that have had such an effect on her?

“Playing Juliet in Heavenly Creatures changed my life,” she says. “And the role of Clementine in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind opened many new doors creatively.”

As she looks to a new future, Winslet also has a chance to look back thanks to the coming re-release of her most successful film Titanic in 3D.

Winslet was only 22 when the film was released, changing her life again. Anonymity – something she cherishes when she blends into the hubbub of New York – would be elusive from that day forward.

“I’m still not comfortable with celebrity and the attention that’s focused on you. I don’t appreciate my life being turned into a soap opera. I don’t think anyone else would,” she says.

“It’s sad that as soon as you reach a certain level of success in our business that your personal life becomes a matter of public record. I love acting, I love the work that I’ve wanted to do ever since I was a child.

“Growing up in an acting family where people struggled to make a living in their profession, I was very grateful to have had the chance to enjoy success at a relatively young age.

“But I would prefer that my job stop whenever I leave the set – except that the job stays with you whenever photographers are following you to the supermarket, or much worse when you’re with your children in the park.”

Often championed as one of the most “normal” Hollywood stars – from her curves to her straightforward nature – Winslet has tried hard to give her kids that same normality.

“Yes, they do get to fly first class with their mum and stay in nice hotels, but they are taught to always have respect for others and to be very grateful for the advantages they have,” Winslet says.

“My greatest fear would be for them to become distanced from the real world or live distorted lives. I want them not have to pay too much attention to their mother’s very strange world. I dread the thought of my eldest Googling me and reading strange gossip.”

Winslet’s future normality may include marriage, despite her two divorces. She says she hasn’t given up on the idea.

“I still believe in the beauty of committing yourself to another person and at least in the idea of marriage as an expression of that commitment. Living with someone will always be a challenge and you hope to be able to find someone with whom you can spend the rest of your days,” she says.

Winslet is attached to director Kenneth Branagh’s next project, the post-WWII tale The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. But her immediate plans are much more simple.

“Getting my children settled in school in England, cooking for them every night, and having loads of time chatting with my friends over coffee,” she says.

“I can’t complain. I’ve had the chance to work on very good projects of late. I hope things continue, but even if they don’t, I’m not going to get upset the way I used to.

“Once you’re in your 30s, you become more practical and you don’t let the ups and downs of your career affect your sense of self-worth or personal wellbeing. That’s probably the greatest lesson I’ve learnt from all this.”

THAT SINKING FEELING

IT WAS, until Avatar, the highest-grossing film in history. And it would be an understatement to say Titanic was a landmark in the careers of its stars Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio.

But Winslet is not overjoyed at the thought of revisiting the film when Titanic 3D is released next month. And not only because she’ll see herself in the buff in three dimensions.

“I’m sure I wasn’t really a very good actress. Seriously, we are talking about something that happened 15 years ago,” she told USA Today. “I’ve learnt so much, and I’ve changed as a person so much since then. Can you imagine anything stranger?”

Titanic director and 3D enthusiast James Cameron has shown Winslet a portion of the 3D rejig.

“I was literally like, ‘Oh my God, make it stop! Is that me? Oh my God, that’s me. Block my ears, somebody! Somebody club out my senses. Make it f—ing stop!’ ” she says.

“And Leo looks so young and so skinny!”

The film’s Oscar-winning producer Jon Landau will be in Australia this month to promote the re-release. But Winslet has said she and DiCaprio won’t be having a Titanic reunion.

“No, we’ll just sit around going, ‘Can you fuckin believe this? Isn’t this weird?’”
